The Token Black Friend: Rethinking Race, Friendship and Belonging

Being the token Black friend in 2026 is something many people are saying 'Absolutely Not' to!!

Year after year, meeting room after meeting room, code-switch after code-switch, Black men and women have had to contend with being the only one. Playing “Where’s Wally?” just to find another colleague with melanin. And the more senior you become, the harder it is to spot Wally Black.

While many have left environments like this to start their own businesses and create more inclusive spaces, there are just as many who have accepted that this is simply the way it is. They’ve decided that doing a job they love and earning the money they need makes the “tokenism” bearable, as long as boundaries are in place and respected.

In the workplace, although we shouldn’t still be having these conversations, many of us tolerate it because it funds the life we want, keeps a roof over our heads, and puts food on the table. But then having to contend with being the only Black friend in an otherwise all-white friendship group? That feels like a step too far.

Most people have different friendship circles for different reasons. Sometimes that naturally means having friends from different backgrounds, cultures, and nationalities, and the occasional catch-up once or twice a year is no issue at all. The question arises when you’re invited into spaces where you’re surrounded by white strangers, all doing their best to relate while trying to suppress the ignorance that, at times, surfaces so naturally.

Then there are the real-life horror stories we’ve heard about the token Black friend who goes away with their so-called white friends and never makes it home. Stories that are enough to ignite something in you, or at the very least make you think twice before accepting the next invitation.

Taking away the extremes, because not every friendship ends in tragedy, is this still something we, as Black people, need to seriously review?

Can we politely decline invitations to spaces where we know we’ll stand out like a sore thumb socially, when we already spend so much of our working lives navigating that reality just to pay our bills? Or do we continue placing ourselves in uncomfortable, and sometimes vulnerable, situations to avoid offending everyone else?

Whatever the answer, one thing is certain: being the token Black friend in a white friendship group shouldn’t still be a thing in 2026.
