Inside the Victoria Beckham Documentary: Lessons on Success, Resilience, and Reinvention

The very first thing I took from Victoria Beckham’s documentary was a stark reminder of just how unkind and unhinged society can be.

A woman who was part of one of the biggest girl groups of our time received constant abuse and unprovoked attacks, simply because she was a young woman who made others uncomfortable. Women resented her confidence; men, well, often just hated women in general.

The second thing I took away was this: never underestimate a woman with a goal, the tenacity to pursue it, and the resilience to rise above the noise. The way women can transform hate and negativity into fuel is something powerful to witness.

The documentary featured a number of familiar faces — Eva Longoria, Tom Ford, Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, and more. Designer and mentor Roland Mouret shared that “you need both ego and modesty when building something,” a statement that holds true across all industries. He believed in Victoria at a time when the media didn’t, and that kind of support speaks volumes.

I love watching documentaries about people I’ve admired, listened to, or simply observed in the public eye, especially those who have risen, fallen, and risen again. Like many young girls, I loved the Spice Girls. Sporty Spice was my style icon, but Posh Spice was definitely the alter ego I tapped into every now and then.

What truly left me flabbergasted was how acceptable it once was for men and women alike to tear someone down, especially a young mother and wife, for things as trivial as being “too skinny,” having “baby weight,” enjoying shopping, or not smiling enough. The entitlement of the media and the public is astonishing. It’s one thing to share opinions privately, but to print them or say them boldly on national television? Unbelievable. Yet, this documentary wasn’t about them, it was about how brilliant Victoria Beckham truly is.

From David Beckham’s documentary, I already had a sense of his wife’s character, but it was refreshing to see her in the spotlight, telling her story in her own words. Many, myself included, assumed that Victoria had it easy in business. Even when her brand was losing significant money, people dismissed it, assuming her family’s wealth would cushion the blow. Yes, David supported and invested in her, and that’s a privilege, but it doesn’t take away from her hard work, dedication, and relentless drive to turn things around.

It’s clear that without the love and support of her family, things could have ended differently. But I also believe that Victoria is living intentionally, that this is her purpose and that she would have found a way to persevere regardless.

Her journey to Paris Fashion Week has been almost 20 years in the making. Watching her evolution from a modest presentation of ten dresses (that critics initially loved, until they decided they couldn’t believe she’d done it herself) to showcasing 40 stunning looks in front of 600 attendees in Paris is nothing short of inspiring.

Personally, I always fall deeper in love with a brand once I understand the person behind it — and this documentary gave me that insight. I must say, after watching it, I may just invest in Victoria Beckham..
