RETHINKING CONTROL: Why Bringing Life Into the World Deserves Better Consideration
Written by: Marina Townsend

There’s so much in society that needs dismantling, adjusting, or simply a fresh review. Control is something many institutions and individuals seek to attain, often to push their own agendas. While I firmly stand against being controlled for selfish gain or negativity, I believe some areas deserve better control and responsibility.

One of those areas? Having children.

The pro-life vs. pro-choice debate has flooded our screens everywhere, whether you live in the States or beyond. I absolutely believe the choice should remain with women in cases of sexual assault or medical emergencies like ectopic pregnancies. But abortion should never be used as a form of contraception.

Too many broken adults are raising broken children, perpetuating the dysfunction that weighs heavily on society. What if bringing a human life into this world was a decision made with greater care and intention?
So you want to have a child? Great, but there should be steps involved. First, the decision must be made by two adults in a committed relationship. Then, both should enter mandatory counselling over a period of 12 weeks to discuss values, expectations, emotional and physical wellbeing, and work through personal traumas. The goal? To gather as much insight and understanding as possible before embarking on this life-changing journey.

The commitment to attend these sessions alone shows accountability. While it won’t eliminate struggles or hardships, I guarantee it will reduce the amount of brokenness carried forward.
There’s no such thing as an ‘accident’ when two consenting adults have unprotected sex. It shouldn’t be done out of boredom, loneliness, or in the hope of keeping someone who clearly doesn’t want to stay. It shouldn’t be used as a weapon or a way to avoid personal responsibility.

Creating, birthing, and raising a human life should be a decision made with deep thought and care. Instead of focusing on the superficial, let’s prioritize the happiness and health of generations to come.
